Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) Jobs.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) is a national Non-Governmental Organization with the Mission of promoting, protecting and enhancing the enjoyment of all human rights by all individuals and groups.

To achieve this Mission, our firm belief is that it largely depends on the extent to which human rights practices are adequately rooted in communities. Our approach therefore seeks to promote the culture of self-reliance
amongst communities in order to enhance their independence and by extension their human dignity.

KHRC seeks to recruit a dynamic individual for the position of Programme Officer (Advocacy) to be based in Nairobi, Kenya, but with occasional field travel.


Purpose of the Job
To contribute to the fulfilment of the organization’s Mission and strategic objectives by providing expertise in development and implementation of integrated projects and strategies for effective advocacy and social transformation to realize the KHRC’s mandate.

Primary tasks
Design and implement projects on transitional justice (rights, reforms and accountability issues) in the society;
Monitor and document progress on reforms and accountability issues in relation to land rights; IDPs protection and assistance; and remedies to victims of historical and present injustices;
Critique or prepare submissions of legislative advisories and policy briefs on the above issues;
Carry out research and write analytical reports with a view to progressively influencing policies, shaping and informing the discourse on human rights, gender justice and democratic governance;
Work with the state and non-state actors on victims’ and peoples’ quest for justice and reforms among other matters related to governance and transitional justice;
Network with the stakeholders at all levels and around the above issues: this entails establishing and coordinating thematic networks with and for victims and other partners.
Produce and submit periodical progress reports on substantive programme activities;
Assist in resource mobilization around the respective areas of work;
Carry out other tasks as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.

Competencies required
A Bachelors’ degree in social sciences preferably in political science, law or public policy;
A thorough understanding of human rights issues, principles, frameworks and situation in the Kenya and beyond;
At least two years work-related experience in policy advocacy or research on justice, reforms and other governance and transitional justice processes;
Ability to work with different stakeholders and partners at all levels in the society: working with victims and grassroots communities will be an added advantage;
A proven track record of commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights, equality principles and gender justice;
Impeccable field and Internet-based research abilities;
Experience in writing research reports;
Fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili;
Experience in team-building and leadership.
